After 2020’s sadly small and socially distant celebrations, we’re all making up for lost time with a more-is-more approach to decking the halls. And with that, come more new trends than ever. Our interior designers share this list of the top four holiday decorating trends to consider as you start untangling those Christmas lights.
- Organic Modern Accessories: Whether it’s oversized pinecones in a table scape, holly sprigs and antlers in a floral arrangement, or a driftwood tabletop tree, this toned-down take on holiday décor focuses on creating a sense of calm in what can be a chaotic season. The palette is a mix of neutrals and earthy, muted hues — like browns, greens and blues — that weave in elements of nature.
- Gnomes: This season, we’ve noticed a surprising number of gnomes popping up in holiday displays, and we are here for it. According to Google Trends, we’re not the only ones: Searches for Christmas gnomes have increased by 525% since 2015. There’s actually a reason we see more of them at Christmastime. However, in Scandinavia, these gnomes (or “julenisse”) are associated with the Christmas season. Much like the American Santa Claus, the julenisse—basically Kris Kringle in gnome form—visits the homes of good children on Christmas Eve. Children leave a bowl of porridge out for him, and in return, the julenisse brings presents to their front door.
- Farmhouse Festive: Google Trends says searches for farmhouse Christmas ideas are up 400% over the last five years, and we’ll go ahead and chalk about 99.9% of that up to Joanna Gaines. (ugh, love her so much!) Farmhouse festive style is known for its simplicity, warmth, and natural textures such as wood, stone, and galvanized steel. You can have yourself a rustic little Christmas by incorporating eclectic antique store finds with simple modern classics will get you the farmhouse festive vibes you’re dreaming about this holiday season.
- Vintage Tree Trimmings: They say trends always come back, and that couldn’t be more true this year as a big trend this holiday season is vintage decor. Look for both true vintage secondhand pieces and decor that looks vintage. Include items that have a nostalgic feel, such as ceramic Christmas trees and vintage signs.
