Design at Work: Create a Home Office Sanctuary

Wonder what you have in common with Ellen DeGeneres and Michael J. Fox and Kelly Wearstler’s rich and famous clientele?

In addition to your charm and sparkling wit, it’s likely that your home office might be common ground. That’s the place where 30 million of us (Ellen and Michael, too) work at least once a week. Three million of us work in a home office full-time.

That’s why the style spotlight is now on how to create home offices that blend function with fashion in ways that inspire, and make going to work a joy.

Whatever the room, designers know to start with foundation pieces. In a home office, that’s a desk and chair.

For a fresh and serene look, try the Sanctuary writing desk with the Surreal Simone Desk Chair.

Imagination takes flight with the Melange Bondurant Desk, a vintage steamer trunk look-alike with faux zinc finish and leather and nailhead trim. Pair it with the Imperial Regal Executive Swivel chair, a comfy retro chair covered in bomber jacket-inspired distressed leather.

Add a touch of mid-century industrial chic with the Wendover Utility Desk.

Break up the all-wood look with the Excalibur Desk Chair from Sam Moore Furniture, covered in a burnished gold leather.

Got a home office sized more like Vermont than Texas? No worries. There are lots of desks and chairs scaled to fit everything from converted corners to tiny spare rooms. To create a designer look, mix styles, colors and finishes.

Glam up with the Workwell Writing Desk. It has a gray shimmer finish and drawers lined in a dazzling blue wallpaper. Va-va-voom.

The Studio 7H Stiegs Desk rewrites Scandinavian style in a modern, organic way.

The La Maison writing desk is not only fashionably French, it’s slender enough to tuck behind a sofa or along a hallway wall.

Don’t let the demure look of the curved apron writing desk  fool you. Behind its pretty face is function galore with a drop-front keyboard center drawer, two utility drawers with removable dividers and one removable writing slide and utility tray for use in either drawer.

The Willow Bend Writing Desk delivers one of the hottest trends of the season: rustic chic.

The Sanctuary Spindle Side Chair adds a calming touch of blue that’ll help you find your Zen again.

Liven up with the Sanctuary Tall Spindle Arm Chair in Ultra Red Finish. It’s power red finish energizes and motivates.

Cool and composed? Even if you’re not, fake it ’til you make it in the Linosa Arm Chair, a classic look in luxe linen and an antique black finish.

With its bold navy and white safari print, the Cadence exposed wood chair roars with style.

Mid-Century modernists, take a seat in the Studio 7H Vibe Bentwood Chair, made of sleek acacia veneers and metal.

The Walden Chair is runway-ready in a gray menswear fabric and dressmaker details like button-tufting and decorative brass studs.

Once you’re picked your desk and chair, add accent pieces in contrasting colors, shapes and sizes. That’ll keep your room (and you) from falling asleep  while also providing additional function.

The Henri Ceramic Table Lamp provides illuminating textural contrast.

Power up with the E-Charge Center. It has five pull-out storage drawers, plus a built-in power bar with five electrical outlets.

The Triple- Drawer Mirrored Lateral File is so pretty, it’ll make even filing appealing. (Ok, maybe).

The Emerald Fretwork Storage Chest puts an Asian spin on storage.

Go Greek with the Melange Greek Key Console.

Even if you don’t have client stop by your home office often, an accent chair is a must because it adds softness and contrast. (Not to mention a comfortable place to take a break). The Liam Leather Swivel Chair is a luxe spin on the blues.

Then, pull the look together with finishing touches that personalize your office and make you smile.

Use wallpaper or scrapbook paper scraps to jazz up magazine files, and organize your desk with egg cups.

With a little imagination, your home office can become an inspiring sanctuary.

That’s how good design works.
