Easy Outdoor Decorating

Article Courtesy of House Beautiful

Get your outdoor space ready for spring and summer with these quick and easy design ideas.

Go Overboard with Candles

The walled patio of a Los Angeles apartment is where designer Dan Marty likes to entertain friends over lunch and dinner. He always has lots and lots of candles burning. The varying candlestick heights add visual interest. “I can’t live without candles,” he says. “They make everything more intimate and romantic.”

Add a Rug

Just like they do indoors, a rug helps to unify a space. In this Los Angeles outdoor room designed by Mary McDonald.

Dress Up an Outdoor Table

Camellias arch over an outdoor dining table draped with a Clarence House linen, Dahlia, in the backyard of a Pasadena, California, house. “Crisp hemstitch linen napkins, candlelight, jasmine in a 19th-century bowl — these are simple and refined luxuries,” owner and designer Lindsay Reid says.

Install Lighting

A chandelier and string of lights add even more romance to the patio of a Corona del Mar, California, house designed by owner Dana Abbott and her design partner, Kim Fiscus. A simple grid of black river rocks add an elegant detail in the concrete patio.
