We know finding the perfect rug can be a challenge, but with a little patience and an open mind, the right rug can transform a room. Not only does it provide warmth, but it helps establish an area within a space for conversation, eating, or any number of reasons. Area rugs also help create a mood. For example, layering textured rugs such as jute and sheepskin create a relaxed environment, so these options might be best in a family room, bedroom, or lake house! Here are the top things to consider when searching for the perfect rug.
MEASURE MEASURE MEASURE
Before anything, you must measure the space and decide what size you might need. It’s a good idea to start by measuring standard sizes, and see which one fits best. How do I know what is a good size?? In a large living room, you might want all of the upholstery furniture to fit on the entire rug- if not, the rug might look disproportionately small. Similarly, if you have a small space don’t be afraid to use full scale rugs, such as an 8×10. Depending on the layout, this will actually make the room feel bigger. Another thing to consider when determining the right size is the traffic pattern. Rugs can naturally direct where people should walk.
Where will the rug be going? In high traffic areas, you might choose one that is more durable or hides stains well. Learn about the different materials and how they can be cleaned. And if you absolutely have to have that light cream rug with a pretty sheen, then look into getting it professionally treated. Keep in mind doors that may open into the rug, because ones with a high pile won’t allow the door to open properly- this is usually the case in entryways or back door hallways.
PATTERN AND COLOR
Now for the fun part! Do you want your rug to be the highlight of the space, or just the backdrop? With a very neutral color palette, choose a rug with a lot of texture or a prominent pattern. If you want to bring in color, pick a rug that incorporates the accent colors from pillows, chairs, or window treatments to tie the space together. We love to balance a loud pattern on a chair with a more muted rug, or vice-versa. For drama lovers, contrast and deeply saturated tones are your best friend!
